Comeback Efforts Fall Short for No. 18 Royals in MIAC Championship Game

WINONA, Minn. – A hot start by the Saint Mary's offense was too much to overcome as the No. 18 Bethel University softball team's comeback efforts came up short in the MIAC Championship game Saturday in Winona, 6-5.

The Royals (30-9) reached the title game for the third straight year after defeating Saint Benedict in the semifinals, 5-3. The win in the semis made it three consecutive seasons of 30 wins for BU.

Championship: Saint Mary's 6, Bethel 5
• Saint Mary's put up a crooked number in its first at-bat going up 4-0 behind back-to-back home runs.
• In the third the Royals produced three runs with two outs cutting the deficit to one. A RBI single by Abby Otterness drove in the first run, before two runs were scored on a single by Camryn Thurow that included an error by the SMU left fielder.
• The Cardinals expanded their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the frame on a single up the middle that was then overrun by Lexi DeBace in center allowing the bases to clear.
• Cortney Hokanson in the top of the fifth pulled the Royals within two on a bloop single to left scoring Otterness.
• Kayla Hokanson one batter later sent a chopper to third where the SMU fielder stepped on the bag for the force out while pinch runner Molly Closser crossed home plate making it 6-5.
• The Royals managed just one hit in their final two at bats.
•

Semifinals: #18 Bethel 5, Saint Benedict 3
• Autumn Earney provided the early fireworks with a two-run homer over the left field fence in the first. Kayla Hokanson drove in another run making 3-0 with a fielder's choice RBI.
• The Bennies tied it up in the fourth with a 3-run shot that cleared the left field foul pole.
• Sidney Bartels put the lead back in the Royals' hand in the fifth send a deep homer over the center field fence.
• Kayla Simacek in the seventh got a pair of strikeouts before an infield popout ended it.
