ST. PAUL, Minn – Behind a 3-for-5 day at the plate from Ty Koehn and a Seven inning complete game shutout on the mound by John Solfest the Bethel University baseball team advanced to the MIAC playoff championship with a 14-2 win over Saint Olaf Friday afternoon.
How it happened:
The Royals grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the second on a Xavier Lortie leadoff bomb to right, Noah Wenberg extended the Bethel lead to two later in the inning on a sharp RBI single to right.
A pair of Ole doubles cut the lead to 2-1. John Solfest was able to limit the damage and get out of the inning with the lead still intact.
In the top of the fourth Mattew Carlsen lined a ball deep to the right center gap one hopping the wall for an RBI triple, later in the inning Carson Christiansen singled up the middle bringing home Carlsen to extend the Royals' lead to 4-1.
Ty Koehn hit a two-run home run over the high wall in right in the top of the fifth, giving the Royals a five run advantage.
Bethel broke it open in the sixth, plating eight runs on nine hits, including three extra base hits for a commanding 14-1 lead.
John Solfest closed it out in the seventh, going the distance, tossing seven innings allowing just three hits, two earned runs, three walks and seven punchouts. Earning the win on the mound his sixth of the season.

The Royals will play the winner of the Saint Marys/Saint Olaf game in the MIAC playoff championship Saturday afternoon at CHS Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
