ST. PETER, Minn. – The Bethel University softball team dropped a twin bill at Gustavus Adolphus Sunday afternoon. The No. 10 Royals surrendered three unanswered falling in the opener 3-1 before being unable to salvage a split dropping game two in extras, 4-3.
Game 1: Gustavus Adolphus 3, #10 Bethel 1
• The Royals struck first in game one with some two-out production.
Abby Otterness set a high fly ball to center that GAC lost in the sun and landed next to the Gustie centerfield. That was enough time for
Lexi DeBace to come around and score from first.
• The Gusties used some small ball to get a runner over to third while a stolen base then made it second and third with two outs. GAC was able to bring both runners in as a grounder got past a diving
Kayla Hokanson at second.
• A one-out triple followed by a double in the sixth extended the Gusties lead to 3-1.
• BU had back-to-back two-out singles from
Autumn Earney and
Lexi DeBace in the seventh but a foul out by Otterness ended Bethel's comeback chances.
Game 2: Gustavus Adolphus 4, #10 Bethel 3 (8 innings)
•
Camryn Thurow provided the first scoring opportunity as her single up the middle scored DeBace for the game's first run.
• After the Guties answered in the second, Earney put the Royals back in front scoring on a passed ball in the third.
• Gustavus had an answer again this time in the fifth tying it up with a sacrifice fly.
• Each team plated a run in the sixth.
Mandalyn Franks' RBI double scored pinch runner
Faith Tverberg while the Gusties got another run on a sacrifice fly.
• Heading into extras a runner was placed at second to start as the MIAC elected to use the international tie breaker rule.
• BU moved its runner to third but couldn't get her home. GAC plated the winning run on a one-out single to left.
