Fourth-Seeded Royals Ready for MIAC Baseball Playoffs

The reigning MIAC Playoff champions will start the quest to defend its title Thursday afternoon as the fourth-seeded Bethel University baseball team opens up the MIAC Playoffs against top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn. at Becker Park where St. John's serves as tournament host.
 
Game two of the tournament comes on Friday against either the winner or loser of second-seeded Saint John's and third-seeded Concordia.

PLAYOFF HISTORY

• The Royals are making their third consecutive appearance into the playoff and 10th overall.
• BU holds an all-time record of 12-13 (.480) in conference playoff games
• It's just the second BU has been the four seed, the other coming in 2013 where they went 1-1 in what as a single-elimination tournament at the time.  
• Bethel has taken home the trophy twice in program history, 2022 and 2018. Last year the Royals became the first MIAC team since 2014 to win both the regular season and playoff title. That came after giving up three runs in the top of the first to Gustavus before scoring nine unanswered in the championship game.
 

ALL-TIME SERIES

• The Royals hold a 34-30 record over the Gusties all-time and have been 4-6 in the last 10 matchups.
• GAC swept the regular season meeting by scores of 12-3 and 8-0.
• In MIAC playoff games against GAC, BU is 2-1.
• Against Concordia, BU is 34-28 all-time and is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings. CC swept the regular season meeting.
• Versus the Johnnies, BU trails the all-time series 29-38 and is 4-5 in the last 10 matchups. The Johnnies took both regular season games in slugfest fashion, 11-3 and 11-10.

ROYAL NOTES

• Max Sutter leads the nation with a 16.00 strikout-to-walk ratio while ranking second with a 0.55 walks allowed per nine innings mark. He also leads the team with 48 strikeouts. 
• Matthew Carlsen ranks third in the MIAC with a team-leading .420 batting average. Carlsen has 18 multi-hit games this year and seven multi-RBI games. Earlier this year he held a 17-game hitting streak and has currently reached base in six straight games. 
• On the bump, John Solfest enters with a perfect 4-0 record, with three of those coming against MIAC opponents. He has a 4.18 ERA in 28 innings of work. 
• The BU pitching staff ranks 12th nationally with a 2.87 walks alloed per nine innigns mark. 
 

IN THE RECORD BOOKS

• Matthew Carlsen's 60 hits is tied for the fourth most in a single-season.
• Matthew Carlsen's .423 career batting average would rank him second all-time if the season ended today. 
• Matthew Carlsen's 173 hits rank eighth all-time.
• Matthew Carlsen's 123 career runs is tied for fifth all-time
• Justin Winterfeldt's 112 career RBIs ranks sixth all-time
• Justin Winterfeldt's 24 career home runs is tied for second all-time.
