SEASON PREVIEW: Defending MIAC Champs Bethel Baseball Kick Off 2023 Campaign

The defending MIAC regular season and playoff champions Bethel baseball team, who received votes in the D3baseball.com Preseason Top 25, is set to kick off its 2023 season this weekend in Topeka, Kan. with a three-game series against Buena Vista.

The Royals are coming off a program-record 35-win season where they went 35-11 and matches a program-best conference mark of 16-4. The also made their second ever NCAA Tournament appearance making a run to the regional final where they fell to Wooster.

2023 SCHEDULE

The 38-game schedule features five NCAA tournament teams from last season. BU’s first 12 games of the season will come at neutral sites including a nine-game spring break trip to Davenport and Auburndale, Fla highlighted by matchups with No. 8 Wisconsin-Stevens Point and No. 11 Rowan

The Royals kick off the home portion of its schedule with a non-conference doubleheader header against Wisconsin-Stout on Thursday, March 23. All 15 home games over the span of nine dates are scheduled to be played at Hargis Park.

The Royals welcome back nine starters on offense and three key pitchers. Junior Matthew Carlsen (.429, 8 HR, 57 RBI, 9 SB) set single-season program records in runs, hits, and RBIs while senior Justin Winterfeldt (.366, 12 HR, 56 RBI) had a single-season record 20 doubles, thank ranked 17th nationally and 119 total bases. 

On the mound, BU returns sophomore Max Sutter (7-3, 68Ks) who posted a 2.50 ERA tossed the fifth most complete games in the nation last year with six. He also ranked 13th nationally with a 0.98 walks allowed per nine innings mark. Fifth-year Marcus Krupke (4.45 ERA) also posted a 7-3 record on the mound ranking second all-time with 20 wins. Krupke was fourth nationally with 0.59 walks allowed per nine innings, giving up a minimal four walks in 60.2 innings of work. Fifth-year Ty Koehn rounds out the starters posting a 5-0 record in nine starts. He tossed 47.2 innings of work where he struck out 57 and had an ERA of 2.64. 

As a team, Bethel finished in the top 20 nationally with a .336 batting average that included 105 doubles. The Royals team ERA of 3.65 and fielding percentage of .972 ranked 14th nationally. The pitching staff ranked 12th nationally with a 3.22 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 11th with a 1.24 WHIP and third with 2.19 walks allowed per nine innings.

Head coach Brian Raabe enters his 12th season as the Royals skipper. He holds an all-time record of 267-145 (.648) that includes four 30-plus win seasons. He's guided BU to a pair of MIAC Playoff championships and two NCAA tournament appearances in the last four complete seasons. 

The reigning MIAC Coach of the Year has produced 27 All-MIAC selections, 19 All-MIAC Defensive Team selections, 18 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and 17 D3baseball.com All-Region award winners.
