ST. PETER, Minn. - The Bethel University men's tennis team had its work cut out for them at the ITA Midwest Regional this past weekend. Even though nearly all players came into the tournament unseeded, they had a solid weekend of great tennis, with someone reaching at least the Round of 32 in every draw, singles and doubles.
Freshman
Gavin Hutter was seeded 17th in the main draw. He received a bye in the Round of 128 and reached the Round of 32 by defeating his opponent in straight sets before falling to Gustavus in a tough match. Hutter and Junior Captain
Brett Eliason also advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles before losing a close match 6-8.
Other notable performances in singles were made by Freshmen
Watson Sheard in the "B" draw and
Ryan Reid in the "C" draw. Sheard played all three matches on Friday, winning the first two in third set tiebreakers. However, exhaustion got the best of him in the Round of 32 and he fell to Carlton for a spot in the Round of 16.
Reid scored a bye in the Round of 128 and went on to win his next match easily: 4-0, 4-0. Unfortunately, his victory streak was cut short by Cornell who, in a third set tiebreaker, took his place in the Round of 16.
