Baseball Battles Weather in Split with Hamline

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – It started out a sunny day, but ended with the Royals taking game two of the doubleheader in pouring rain. The Bethel University baseball team split its weekday doubleheader with Hamline at Hargis Park.

Hamline handed the Royals their first conference loss of the season in game one, 7-3, before Bethel's bats weathered two rain delays taking game two 13-4.

Game 1: Hamline 7, Bethel 3
The Pipers used a pair of home runs to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third. Bethel put up a crooked number in the home half of the inning courtesy of a passed ball and an RBI groundout from Luke Carlson.

Out of the pen Jordan Krupke gave up a three-run home run after starter Peyton Gallagher allowed the first two batters aboard.

The Royals got pushed a run across with two outs cutting it to 6-3 on Justin Winterfedlt's double to left.

Game 2: Bethel 13, Hamline 4
After giving up two runs in the first, both of which were unearned, Ty Koehn pitched a scoreless second and third. In the meantime, BU took a 3-2 lead large in part to back-to-back scoring when Nick Wibben began his three-RBI game with a triple and Keenan Hodgkin a double.

Reliver Bret Carlson, who picked up the win, gave up four hits and two runs through the next four innings.

Thomas Friesen's grand slam to right center highlighted Bethel's seven-run fifth following a lengthy rain delay.

The Royals bullpen kept Hamline off the board through the final three frames. All they had to do was wait out one more rain delay that started heading into the bottom of the eighth.
