WINONA, Minn. – For the second time this year, the Bethel University men's hockey team came out on the wrong end of a one-goal game with Saint Mary's. In a game that saw five power play goals, the Royals feel to the Cardinals 6-5 in overtime.
Bethel (2-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) held a 5-3 advantage with 12:15 remaining in the third period. Saint Mary's (5-3-0, 3-2-0 MIAC) took advantage of a power play opportunity cutting the lead to one before tying it with a goal at the 17:35 mark.
A costly penalty by
Carter Wagner put Bethel a man down 30 seconds into the overtime period. Netminder
Travis Allen did everything he could to keep Bethel in it with four straight saves before the Cardinals tapped in a rebound shot for the sudden death victory.
Allen finished the night with 30 saves.
A clean opening period sent the teams into the first intermission tied at 1-1. SMU added a pair of goals 12 seconds apart in the second before BU started a stretch of four straight goals.
Wagner started his multi-goal night scoring on the power play before
Ben Ward followed it up with an extra man advantage goal of his own.
Blake Nelson (Jordan Stone,
Jory McWilliams) lit up the lamp just before the second intermission giving BU a 4-3 advantage.
Wagner scored 7:45 into the third giving the Royals a two-goal advantage before SMU tallied three straight goals to secure the win.
Bethel will play its final two remaining games at home when they host Concordia on Wednesday and St. Thomas on Friday.
