MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore
Kayla Simacek tossed her first career perfect game in the Bethel University softball team's 12-0 season opening victory over Wisconsin-Stout. Bethel went on to win game two by a score of 2-0 for the sweep.
Simacek's perfect game is the first for the Royals dating back to at least 2001. Previously the only game that came close to a perfect game was a combined no-hitter between Nea Harkness and Brianna Lyding on March 19, 2009.
Game 1: Bethel 12, UW-Stout 0 // 5 innings
The bats came alive early and often for the Royals who plated three runs in the opening frame. Bethel took advantage of every opportunity plating four in the second and five in the fifth.
Calli Maki, who started the game in right field, led the way going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and crossing the plate three times. Cleanup hitter
Kayla Hokanson's two-RBI single to center in the third gave BU the 12-0 advantage.
Junior
Halley Jones made the most of her Bethel debut going 2-for-2 at the dish with two runs and a RBI.
Simacek struck out six of the 15 hitters she faced while forcing zeros across the board.
Game 2: Bethel 2, UW-Stout 0
Game two proved to be a bit closer in Friday's non-conference doubleheader. After a scoreless first two innings, Cali Maki broke the tie with her RBI single scoring
Sadie Hanzalik who reached with a leadoff double.
Maki got the start in the circle going 3.2 innings and giving up four hits and no runs. Simacek came in for relief with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth. She closed the frame with a strikeout which sparked a streak of five consecutive Ks.
Courtney Hokanson expanded BU's lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly brining in
Katie Stewart who tripled to left earlier in the inning.
In the seventh, Bethel stranded a runner at third before UW-Stout looked to spark a comeback with a leadoff single. But Simacek put that though to rest quick striking out the side to finish game two with a career-high eight strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
