Tommies Snap Royals Three-Game Win Streak

CaST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University softball team suffered its first sweep of the season falling to St. Thomas twice Sunday afternoon in St. Paul.

Bethel (7-3) wasn't able to push across the tying run from third in the seventh dropping game one 4-3. St. Thomas (6-2) showed off its power in game two taking it 10-2 in five innings.

Game 1: St. Thomas 5, Bethel 4
There was no slow start in the opener with both teams plating a run in the opening frame.

Carli Botten reached on an infield single before moving to second on a wild pitch. With Botten stealing third, UST over threw third allowing Botten to score making it 2-1. The Tommies put up a three-spot in the bottom of the second with a bases clearing triple.

Katie Stewart picked a perfect time for her first career home run, sending a bomb to center field evening the contest up at 4-4.

Both starters in the circle settled in after the third. Calli Maki tossed a scoreless third and fourth before UST was able to score its leadoff walk in the fifth. Despite being charged with the loss Maki struck out four, walked one and gave up six hits.

The Tommies ace Kierstin Anderson-Glass kept BU off the board through the final four frames despite Bethel putting the game-tying run at third in the seventh. Botten had stolen second before advancing to third on another throwing error.

BU was in a good spot with its top hitter in Amanda Gemuenden at the plate but the Tommies new arm in the circle induced a game-ending groundout.

Game 2: St. Thomas 10, Bethel 2 // 5 innings
Things started hot for the Royals who scored both their runs in the opening frame thanks to two Tommie errors.

Getting the start in the circle, Kayla Simacek forced UST into its only 1-2-3 inning. From there it was all Tommies adding a run in the second, three in the third and six in the fifth.

Bethel would not put a runner on second after the first until the top of the fifth on a Calli Maki double.
