ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team scored three second period goals Wednesday night to secure their sixth straight victory over the College of Saint Benedict by a score of 3-2. The Bennies scored the games first and last goals in the first and third periods but it was the Royals dominant second period that was the difference.
Grace Halvorson and
Emily Roder scored power play goals to give the Royals the lead and
Lexi DeBace added an even strength goal that would be the difference maker. Bethel held a slim 30-27 shots on goal advantage and
Mallory Tidona made her season debut in net, making 25 saves.
CSB would strike first midway through the first period and outshot the Royals 10-7. BU changed that tone early in the second with
Grace Halvorson scoring her second goal of the season off an assist from
Bri Stafne just 1:16 into the period. The score came on the power play and Bethel found themselves on the power play again with two minutes remaining in the period. Just eight seconds in Bethel converted with
Emily Roder scoring and
Sydnee Hanson assisting to take a 2-1 lead. The Royals wasted little time in expanding that lead as just 24 seconds after their second goal they scored again. This time in 5-on-5 play
Lexi DeBace scored unassisted to build the lead to 3-1. Bethel outshot CSB 16-9 in the period to take control of the game. DeBace's goal would prove to be critical as the Bennies were able to score with 4:45 remaining but CSB was unable to get any more shots on goal in the remaining minutes for the final score of 3-2.
The win improves Bethel to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in MIAC play. The Royals have defeated Saint Ben's six consecutive times and 17 of the last 19 dating back to 2011-12. The loss for the Bennies drops them to 0-5-1 on the season. Bethel will hit the road again on Saturday and this time head farther up I-94, all the way to Moorhead, where they will take on the Cobbers of Concordia College at 3 p.m.
