Meyer’s OT Buzzer Beater Gives Royals MIAC Opening win Over Saint John’s

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Playing in overtime is nothing new for the Bethel University men's hockey team despite being in the early stages of the season. Playing in their third OT in four games, Caydon Meyer's hockey style buzzer beater lifted the Royals to a MIAC opening win over Saint John's Wednesday evening, 1-0.

A heavy flurry of saves by Ridge Gerads at the other end gave Bethel (4-0-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) an opportunity to skate to the other end as Meyer's brought it across the blue line firing off a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle with just under a second to go.

Luke Posner almost scored the game winner earlier in the overtime on a breakaway opportunity before the Johnnies were whistled for hooking which didn't allow Posner to fire off a shot. Bethel went cold on the 4-on-3 advantage.

Bethel gave themselves a chance to win by killing off four SJU power plays, three of which came in the second.

The Royals were heavily outshot in the scoreless 60 minutes, 40-24, but all it took was one in the extra five minutes.

Gerads finished the night with 42 saves capturing his first shutout in a Royals uniform.

Picking up their first win over SJU since 2015, the Royals and Johnnies "close out" the MIAC series later in the month on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Bethel University Arena.

As for the coming weekend, BU hits the road taking on Northland Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to take on the reigning national champions from 2019 and No. 11th ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday at 7 p.m.
