MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethel University men's hockey team bounced back from a 6-0 series opening loss with a 2-2 tie Saturday evening at No. 9 Augsburg. The Auggies earned the extra point in the MIAC standings scoring in the 3-on-3 overtime.
The tie snaps a five-game losing skid and moves the Royals to 3-11-3 on the year and 2-3-3 in the MIAC where they sit fifth with 10 points. Up next the Royals have Saint Mary's with the series opener at home next Friday at 7 p.m.
Augsburg broke the scoreless tie 3:29 into the second period. Starting netminder
Joe Sheppard had 17 consecutive saves before the Auggies could crack him.
Curtis Hansen tied things up with 8:04 left to go in the second.
Luke Posner picked up his first collegiate assist while
Nick Ketola was tallied for the secondary assist.
Posner tallied his second multi-point game of the season giving BU the lead while Hansen did the same picking up the assist. BU's 2-1 lead didn't last long as the Auggies tied it up just over two minutes into the third.
Both teams had good looks down the stretch but the goalies held strong. Sheppard picked up 23 saves in the final period and two in the first overtime en route to matching a career-high 50 saves.
Augsburg outshot the Royals 5-2 in the second overtime, scoring at the 3:10 mark in the second overtime for the extra MIAC point.

Augsburg took the series opener getting off to a fast start with a three-goal opening period.
Bethel had its chances in the second period but was narrowly outshot 10-9. The Auggies added two more even strength goals taking a 5-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Royals had a pair of early power play opportunities, but the nations second-best penalty killing team kept the Royals scoreless. It was an active final six minutes in the penalty box as things got physical on the ice and 14 penalties were called.
The lone goal for Augsburg in the third came while on the power play in the final minute.
