ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University softball team picked up its second consecutive conference sweep Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The Royals offense came showed out once again defeating Concordia 6-0 in the opener and 16-0 in the nightcap.
Sophomore leadoff hitter
Allie Fauth had a 5-for-6 showing at the plate with four runs and six RBIs. Sophomore
Jamie Axelberg drove in six runs herself including a grand slam in game one.
The Royals improve to 19-3 on the year and 4-2 in MIAC play. Bethel makes the quick turnaround to take on St. Catherine's tomorrow in St. Paul. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
Game 1: Bethel 6, Concordia 0
The Royals picked up their second shutout of the year behind the strong arm of junior right-hander
Hannah Schmidt. The Roseville, Minn. native improved to 8-1 tossing a five hit complete game where she stuck out five.
Back-to-back bunt singles by
Allie Fauth and
Mariah Uphoff sparked the offense in the third after the Royals left two stranded in their previous at bat. Down in the count 0-2
Amanda Gemuenden took one for the team to load the bases up for Axelberg. Axelberg took full advantage smacking a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for her seventh home run of the year.
Junior
Hannah Schmidt made quick work of the Cobbers retiring 12 of their first 14 hitters. In the complete game effort, Schmidt improved to 8-1 tossing her second shutout of the year where she struck out five.
In the fourth, A. Fauth drove in pinch runner
Angela Dabu with a single before picking up another RBI in the sixth where she scored
Alexa Hanowski.
Game 2: Bethel 16, Concordia 0 (5 innings)
The Royals wasted no time getting on the board plating 10 runs in the opening frame. BU did so on six hits, one of which was a double by Axelberg, and one Concordia error.
Cassidy Abbott singled through the left side to start off a six run second inning.
Allie Fauth five hitters in singled up the middle to score a pair to make it 12-0. Axelberg and
Calli Maki both doubled to bring in runs as the Royals took a 16-0 lead.
Maki picked up the win in the circle improving to 8-1 tossing three innings of work. Maki surrendered two hits and struck out three. Out of the pen,
Megan Thurow allowed one hit in two innings of work and struck out three.
