ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – For the second time in three years and seventh time in program history, the Bethel University men's tennis team is set to make an appearance in the MIAC men's tennis playoffs.
The Royals earned the No. 5 seed that was determined by virtue of total match victories between Saint John's, Macalester and the Royals due to a three-way tie for third between the squads.
Bethel is set to open up the tournament at fourth-seeded Macalester in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 30. With inclement weather in the forecast, the two teams will now play indoors at Lifetime Fitness in Bloomington, Minn at 3 p.m. The winner of Tuesday's match will move on to face top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus in the semifinals on Thursday, May 2. The second semifinal that is set will be between No. 2-seeded Carleton and No. 3-seeded Saint John's.
BU is 4-6 all-time in the MIAC playoffs. The Royals have now appeared in three of the last six playoffs with the pervious appearance coming in 2017 and 2014 prior to that. This year marks the second time the Royals were a five seed where the fell in the quarterfinals to fourth-seeded St. Olaf in 2014.
The Royals and Scots met just over two weeks ago at Ona Orth Athletic Complex where BU came away with a nail biting 5-4 victory. Bethel went up 3-0 winning all three doubles matches, it then came down to the No. 1 singles match between
Hunter Fernelius and Macalester's Sam Hochberger. Fernelius took the opening set 6-3 before taking the second 7-5. He trailed 4-5 before breaking Hochberger's serve to win in straight sets.
