ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University softball team found itself on the wrong end of a walk-off as they were swept by St. Catherine Friday afternoon. The host Wildcats took game two 4-3 on a walk-off single after taking the opener 6-2.
The sweep drops Bethel to 20-8 on the year and 5-7 in MIAC play. A quick turnaround puts the Royals in action tomorrow against Gustavus Adolphus at Ona Orth Athletic Complex in the final home game of the season. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
Game 1: St. Catherine 6, Bethel 2
St. Kate's plated the game's first run driving in its leadoff single in the first. The Wildcats threatened again in the third with two outs, but
Hannah Schmidt in the circle worked out of the jam forcing SCU to strand a pair.
Schmidt led off the fifth with a single and was then pinch ran for by
Angela Dabu. Dabu attempted to move into scoring position but was caught stealing moments later.
Lexi DeBace, who pinch hit for
Cassidy Abbott, notched a two-out double while
Allie Fauth followed with a single.
Mariah Uphoff was not able to leg on a grounder to third as the play ended the Royals chances.
Jamie Axelberg sparked some life into the Royals with her conference leading eighth home run of the year. The two run shot to right pulled the Royals within 4-2.
SCU responded right back putting up two more runs in the home half of the sixth.
The Royals in the seventh took advantage of a Wildcat error putting its first two batters in scoring position. A one out walk to
Amanda Gemuenden loaded the bases for Axelberg. SCU picked up the win after Axelberg flied out to right and DeBace was retired on the same play.
Game 2: St. Catherine 4, Bethel 3
The Royals found themselves on the wrong end of a walk-off single. St. Kate's nine hitter tripled to left before being brought in by the Wildcats leadoff hitter to complete the sweep.
Bethel's top of the order was feeling it going a combined 6-for-12.
Mariah Uphoff, batting in the leadoff spot, scored on a Wildcat error before
Alexa Hanowski drove in A. Fauth with an infield single to give BU an early 2-0 lead.
St. Kate's responded back in the second tying it up with a pair of two-out runs. The Wildcats took the lead in the third with a solo home run to make it 3-2.
Calli Maki worked out of a jam in the fourth forcing SCU to strand a pair of runners in scoring position. The offense helped out Maki as Axelberg's fly out to right scored Uphoff to tie things back up before the Wildcats took it in the seventh.
