Spring Break Blog: Day 5

Spring break 2019 is wrapping up for Bethel Athletics as many teams have made their way to warmer climates for the week away from the Bethel University campus in Arden Hills. Bethel softball continues its offensive dominance while women's tennis and baseball both put a tally in the win column. Softball: Bethel 10, Springfield 4 (Box Score) | Bethel 5, St. Norbert 2 (Box Score)
Bethel extended its winning streak to eight games with a pair of wins Thursday afternoon. A combined eight runs between the fifth and sixth inning led the Royals to a 10-4 win over Springfield College before defeating St. Norbert 5-2 thanks to a three-run fifth inning.

BU recorded six extra base hits in game one highlighted by a two RBI triple off the bat of Amanda Gemuenden who tallied four RBIs in the game. Jamie Axelberg blasted a two-run home run in the opening frame of game two before Gemuenden belted a three-run bomb in the fifth to lead the way for BU.

Calli Maki improved to 5-0 picking up a relief win in game one before tossing a complete game effort in game two.

Baseball: Bethel 13, St. Lawrence 3 (Box Score)
The Royals won their fourth straight with a 13-3 win over St. Lawrence. A five-run sixth inning highlighted the 13-3 win for BU. Parker Mullenbach drove in a team-best four runs while Joey Fredrickson drove in three runs. Michael Bohlke picked up the win on the mound giving up three runs in seven innings of work while striking out five. 

Women's Tennis: Bethel 8, Hamilton 1 | Bethel 6, Concordia (Wis.) 3
The Royals took an early 3-0 lead winning all three doubles matches in their spring break finale. In singles play Grace Riermann battled to a three set win at No. 1 singles 6-7, 6-3, 10-2. Maggie Riermann and Mackenzie Novak both picked up wins to round out the top three singles. Meghan Schuler and Hayley Helberg captured wins in their single matches as well.

Against Concordia (Wis.) BU took all three doubles matches. At No. 1 singles Novak won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Schuler at No. 3 singles wont a three setter after dropping the opening set.  Helberg then took the No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1. 

Men's Tennis: Hamilton 7, Bethel 2
Hunter Fernelius and Jason Reilly picked up the lone doubles win for the Royals in their spring break finale, 8-5. Fernelius earned BU's second team point with a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the No. 1 singles match.

Women's Golf
The Royals rounded out their spring break trip with match play against NCAA Division II Flagler. Nicole Miller took her match all the way down to the last hole before dropping it to Flagler's No. 1 singles. Katie Engelking also battled to the final two holes. Bethel in its final matches battled to the end competing neck-and-neck before falling to Flagler. The two teams have agreed that after a competitive match to meet up against next spring.
