MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethel University men's tennis team collected its second straight shutout in MIAC play defeating St. Olaf 9-0 Friday evening inside the Baseline Tennis Center.
With a pair of wins in doubles and singles play, senior
Hunter Fernelius became the third Royal to win 100 career team matches. Fernelius also has a total of 119 wins in his Bethel career and is two wins shy of tying Kolin Kiekhoefers. The Royals improved to 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in league play. Bethel returns to the courts next Saturday as they take on the University of Wisconsin-La Croose in non-conference play.
Bethel jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after
Hunter Fernelius and
Jason Reilly battled to an 8-7 decision after winning the tie breaker 7-5.
Joey Mueller and Nick Kndudsen kicked off that match with a commanding 8-0 win before Zach Kanto and
Erik Beckers took the No. 2 doubles match 8-5.
Fernelius captured his 100 career team win opening up singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Â
Joey Mueller won a tightly contested No. 6 singles match 7-5, 7-5.
Nick Knudsen for the second straight weekend found himself battling to the end. The sophomore helped avenge last year's lost to St. Olaf with a three set decision by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 10-1.
