Royals Fall to No. 9 Hamline by Same 2-1 Score

ST. PAUL - The Bethel University women's hockey team put up another outstanding effort against No. 9-ranked Hamline University but for the second straight game were defeated 2-1. Unlike Friday night, the Royals never led in Saturday's contest with all of the scoring taking place in the second period. HU scored the first and last goals of the period, and the game, with Bethel's score coming from Courtney Johnston. After Mallory Tidona turned in a 33 save performance on Friday, freshman Baliegh Shuck made 36 saves to keep the Royals always within one score of the MIAC's top scoring team.

After a scoreless first period, the Pipers struck first in the second, scoring at 5:13 in to take the 1-0 lead. Courtney Johnston scored off an assist from Annika Swanson to tie it back up for the Royals at 13:54 but the tie did not last long. Hamline scored the eventual game winner on a power play just two minutes later. Hamline outshot Bethel 38-14 on the night. The Pipers were averaging an MIAC best 3.86 goals per game entering the series with the Royals but managed just four goals total in the two game set.

The Royals wrap up the first semester of action with a 3-6 overall record and 2-4 MIAC record. Five of Bethel's six losses have come to Top 10 ranked teams, the last three consecutive all being one goal losses by the same 2-1 score. Bethel will not be in action again until January 3rd and 4th when they will return once again to the same TRIA Rink when they take on a pair of non-conference foes in Lake Forest College and St. Norbert College.
