ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team founds itself back in the win column Friday evening taking the series opener at Hamline 3-2 thanks to three unanswered goals.
The Royals snap a three-game losing skid moving to 3-6-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in the MIAC. Bethel and Hamline close out the series tomorrow night at Bethel University Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
Special teams controlled the night starting the comeback for the Royals in the second period. Trailing 2-0 heading into the intermission – after killing off three first period penalties – Bethel found a way to keep its hopes alive with
Johan Kling (
Jarrett Cammarata) scoring on the power play 14:10 into the second.
With the slow start a one goal deficit heading into the second intermission wasn't the worse thing for the Royals, but
Kade Brannon had other intentions. The senior forward tied things up at 2-2 with three seconds remaining with assists going to
Jacob Papesh and
Tom Nagle.
On its final power play opportunity, it only took 35 seconds for
Josiah Roen (
Dylan Giorgio) to light up the lamp.
The special teams had to go to work one more time killing off a Piper penalty with under six minutes to go making them 6-for-6 on the kill.
Netminder
Ridge Gerads had a consistent night picking up 20 saves, 17 of which came after allowing two goals.
