ST. PETER, Minn. – The Bethel University men's tennis team competed at the ITA Midwest Region Championships this past weekend hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The Royals efforts were led by sophomore
Jason Reilly who made it to the third round of the singles draw before losing to the No. 4 seed. Reilly and sophomore
Erik Beckers teamed up in the doubles draw reaching the quarterfinals – something no doubles duo has done in program history at the ITA Midwest Regional – before falling to the No. 2 overall seed 8-5 in a great match.
"We competed extremely hard and I am super excited for the season ahead with the progress that we have already made," said head coach
Drew Fernelius.
The duo won their opening match 8-4 before defeating the No. 9-seeded team from Gustavus, 8-5, and the No. 8-seeded team from Concordia in the third round 8-7. Individually, Reilly reached the third round winning in straight sets each time before falling to the No. 4 seed 5-7, 3-6. Beckers dropped his opening singles match of the tournament 3-6, 3-6.
Senior
Zach Kantor and junior
Joey Mueller won their opening match of doubles play before losing 7-8 to the No. 6-seeded team from Saint John's. From there they won four rounds making the consolation finals before losing to a team from Gustavus 6-8.
Sophomore
Jacob Lukkarila and
Luke Wyly both won three matches on Friday making the Round of 16 – out of 128 players – in the singles draw of the Midwest Open hosted by Gustavus Adolphus. Sophomore
Andrew Jenson won a pair of matches making the Round of 32 while Trent Zeibol lost in the first round. Jenson and Zeibol competed in the doubles bracket but fell in the second round.
