BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team skated to the end with Saint John's University dropping the series finale 3-0 Saturday evening at Bethel University Arena.
It was a different tale from Friday night's contest as both teams skated to a scoreless first period with each garnering one power player opportunity.
In the second, the Johnnies struck first as a loose puck went right to Robb Stautz who sent it past goaltender Joe Sheppard, who collected 33 saves, was on the ice following a big save. Bethel kept it at 1-0 after killing two big penalties midway through the period including 58 seconds of 5-on-3 action.
Bethel went to the power play just a 1:28 into the third as the Johnnies were whistled for to many men on the ice. The Royals took the short end of the stick surrendering a shorthanded goal with just over a minute to go in the power play. Despite the Royals outshooting SJU 10-9 in the final period, the Johnnies added one more on the power play with 1:31 remaining to take the 3-0 victory.
Saint John's 5, Bethel 1
The Johnnies took the series opener 5-1 Friday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center while outshooting the Royals by a 55-11 margin.
Bethel held the Johnnies to just one goal in the opening period despite being out-shot 19-6 in the first 20 minutes. SJU took advantage of its time in the offensive zone scoring three goals in the second period. The Johnnies forecheck got the best of Bethel forcing the Royals to take just two shots in the second period.
The Johnnies added a fifth goal 8:18 into the third before Jay Paul responded for the Royals. Goaltender Joe Sheppard made a solid save off the faceoff before the Royals could go the other way. On the other end Paul scored his first of the season at 15:47 with assists from Austin Langworthy and Curtis Hanson.
