ST. PAUL, Minn. – Late third period scoring led the Bethel University men's hockey team to settle for a series split with Hamline after dropping the finale Saturday night 2-1 inside TRIA Arena.
Late power play opportunities for Hamline proved to be the difference in a low scoring series finale that followed a Friday night 7-1 contest. The Pipers scored two goals within 20 seconds of each other to take the 2-1 lead with 8:07 remaining in the game. Hamline's first goal came while on the power play with Mitch Hall sneaking one past starting goalie
Ridge Gerads after a blocked shot by
Dallas Marvin deflected towards the front of the net. In the blink of an eye the Pipers put in their second unanswered goal moments later after winning the faceoff on the restart.
The Royals would have two more power play opportunities in the final seven minutes, as well as playing with an empty net in the final minute, but were unable to find the equalizer.
After a scoreless first,
Curtis Hansen opened up the scoring at 14:50 in the second.
Nick Ketola recorded his fifth point of the weekend with the primary assist while
Charlie Haugen collected his first collegiate assist.
Hamline narrowly outshot Bethel by a 28-25 margin. The Bethel penalty kill would go 5-for-6 tonight with Gerads collecting 26 saves.
Bethel returns to action next weekend in a MIAC series with Saint Mary's University. The series finale will take place Saturday at Bethel University Arena with a puck drop time of 7 p.m. The Royals will also take Saturday to honor its four seniors in a pregame ceremony on the ice.
