Bethel Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep over UW-Stout

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Bethel University's baseball team celebrated senior day during their regular season finale against the University of Wisconsin-Stout Sunday. Fortunately for the Royals (29-9), senior day wasn't the only thing to celebrate, as BU swept the Blue Devils (8-23) by final scores of 7-5 and 12-3.

BU scored six early runs in game one and that proved to be enough to secure the win. The Royals plated three in the first and three in the second, but UW-Stout made things interesting with a four-run fourth to make it 6-5. Bethel got an insurance run in the fifth and held Stout scoreless in the final two frames.

John Leach finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and two RBI. Austin Ledin, Brandon Meyer, and Jake Schubert also collected a pair of hits. Ledin and Schubert each recorded a double, while Sam Horner scored three times.

Leach got the start in game one and gave up one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out four in 3.0 innings pitched. Houston Droel threw 2.2 shutout innings in relief and Jake Marsh earned save No. 8 on the season with a 1-2-3 seventh. Sunday's save was Marsh's 15th career, which sets a new program record at Bethel. He passes Ben Turnwall, who earned 14 from 2006-09.

Bethel's bats continued to roll in game two, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth, while BU's pitching and defense held the Blue Devils to three runs in Sunday's finale.

Joey Fredrickson went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, while John Leach finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs, and two RBI. Sam Horner went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI, and two runs and Mitch Butvilas ended 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI. A day after hitting his first career home run, Jake Schubert made it two straight days with a homer by hitting a three-run shot in the second inning.

David Cushing had to leave the game after a scoreless 1.1 innings after taking a line drive to the arm and so Brady Leahy was asked to come in with very limited warm up. Leahy earned the win by giving up two runs in 3.2 innings of work. He surrendered two hits and three walks, but struck out three in his longest outing of the season. Joel Virshek gave up one run in the final two frames.

The next stop for Bethel baseball is the MIAC Playoffs—a destination they've now reached six times in the seven years under Head Coach Brian Raabe. The Royals' seed and opponent is still to be determined, however. BU can finish no worse than a tie for second, but if St. Thomas loses one game to Gustavus Monday or Concordia finishes as the No. 7 seed the Royals will earn the No. 2 seed and a first round bye. If UST sweeps Gustavus and Hamline finishes No. 7, BU will be the No. 3 seed.
