ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—It's official. April 25, 2018 is
John Leach day.
Â
The pitcher and first baseman from Edina, Minn., had a day he'll never forget. The 6-5, senior hit a three-run walk-off home run in Wednesday's opener to give Bethel a 4-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College. He then hit another three-run home run in the fourth inning of game two that put the Royals (20-6, 7-3 MIAC) ahead of the Gusties (11-12, 3-5 MIAC) 6-5. BU then went on to win 7-5. As if two game-winning, three-run home runs weren't enough, Leach earned the win in game two by throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Â
The first game was a pitcher's duel until the very end.
Michael Bohlke held Gustavus scoreless in the first six innings, giving up just two hits and one walk, while striking out one in the midweek performance on short rest. Bethel got the game's first run in the bottom of the sixth when
Joey Fredrickson hit a suicide squeeze bunt that scored… you guessed it,
John Leach.
Â
The Gusties were able to even the game in the top of the seventh with a single and double to leadoff the inning, but two base-running blunders kept the game tied at 1-1.
Michael Wesner then led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. GAC walked
Sam Horner before Leach ended the game with a bomb just inside the left field foul pole.
Â
Leach ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and
John Horner also finished with two hits.
Jake Marsh was credited with the win in relief.
Â
Game two was much different than the first. Bethel trailed 5-2 after 3.5 innings of play, but a momentous fourth frame and an insurance run in the fifth propelled the Royals to a sweep.
Â
BU collected 12 hits throughout Wednesday's finale.
John Leach went 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI, while
John Horner,
Sam Horner, and
Michael Wesner each finished two hits. Wesner and
Bo Lovdahl both posted a double during the seven-inning game.
Â
Noah Luedtke got the start in game two and gave up five runs—three earned—in 3.2 innings pitched. He allowed five hits and one walk, while striking out five.
John Leach got the win after allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out two in 2.1 frames.
Jake Marsh gathered save number four on the season by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh.
Â
Bethel welcomes Saint Mary's University for what's shaping up to be a huge doubleheader on Saturday, April 28.
