Royals Sweep Lumberjacks in Early-Morning Doubleheader

MINNEAPOLIS—The Bethel University baseball team continued their 2018 campaign with two wins against Northland College under the lights of U.S. Bank stadium early Tuesday morning. The Royals (3-1) hosted the Lumberjacks (0-2) in a two-game series with the first game starting at 6 a.m.

Bethel started out the scoring in game one with a sacrifice fly by John Horner to bring in Michael Wesner from third. Three unearned runs in the fourth stretched the Royals' lead to 4-0. A John Horner double to right-center scored Parker Mullenbach who had reached on an error earlier in the inning. Two walks loaded the bases for Esteban Velasco, who drew a third straight walk to bring in Horner from third. A two-run homer by Michael Wesner pushed the lead to 7-1 and sealed the win for BU.

Michael Bohlke got his first win of the season as he went 6.0 innings, giving up just four hits, one walk, and one run while striking out five. Wesner had the hot stick for the Royals, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, one triple, and one homerun. John Horner also drove in two runs while going 1-for-2 with a double and one run scored. BU racked up 10 hits and six RBI, while drawing a season-best eight walks.

Game two saw a lot of first-inning action for Bethel. After a 1-2-3 top of the first for Carson Selin, the Royals quickly loaded bases off a single and two walks. Joey Fredrickson seized the opportunity and proceeded to send one over the left field fence for BU's first grand slam of the season. This four-run lead proved to be plenty as Selin shut out the Jacks. The Royals added one run in the second, third, and sixth inning to bring the final to 7-0.

Carson Selin made his second appearance of the season, but first start in which he gave up just three hits, zero runs, and zero walks, while striking out six. The Royals faced the minimum amount of Northland hitters, 21, in the second game as all four Lumberjacks who reached base in the game where erased by four double plays. Joey Fredrickson led the Royals in runs batted in with four as he went 1-for-3 from the plate. Mitch Butvilas went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double resulting in one RBI and one run, while Wesner completed the cycle for the day with a single and double.

Bethel closes out their indoor schedule with a double header against Buena Vista University on Thursday, March 8 at U.S. Bank Stadium. First pitch between the Royals and Beavers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
