Royals Dominate NAIA Northwestern College and NCAA DII Minnesota State-Mankato, 9-0 and 8-1


Bethel University women's tennis opened their 2018 season with a double header Saturday at Owatonna Tennis Club. They Royals faced off against Northwestern College (Iowa) and Minnesota State University – Mankato. A 9-0 win over NC and an 8-1 win over MSUM has them sitting perfect on the year.

The morning match against Northwestern saw No. 1 doubles team Maggie Riermann and Mattie Kidder pull out an 8-3 victory. The pair also earned victories in their respective singles matches: Riermann won 6-3, 6-2 and Kidder won 6-1, 6-3. The No. 2 (Jill Weinzetell and Mackenzie Novak) and 3 (Mattie Lubben) doubles team also won their matches 8-1 and 8-0 respectively. No. 4 singles player Sami Hindt earned a dominant 6-0, 6-1 match victory to help the Royals get the win against the Red Raiders.

The Royals second match of the day, against the Mavericks, was nearly as dominant as the first. Bethel's Maggie Riermann and Mattie Kidder got another No. 1 doubles victory by a score of 8-1. The No. 2 doubles match saw Mackenzie Novak and Sami Hindt take home an 8-2 victory. Freshman Maggie Riermann pulled out a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 tie breaker victory to help lift the Royals over the Mavericks. Jill Weinzetell also won her No. 5 singles match in three sets by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.

"A good day for Bethel Royals Tennis, I'm really proud of the team," Head coach Drew Fernelius said.  "They really came ready to play and it showed out there today."

BU looks to remain undefeated as they start MIAC play next Saturday as they go to Winona, MN to play Saint Mary's University at 12 p.m. The Cardinals head into the matchup with a 1-2 record.
