Royals Drop First Match of the Season to UW-LaCrosse

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. - Bethel University women's tennis was back in action Sunday afternoon with a match against the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. The Royals (4-1, 2-0 MIAC) suffered their first loss of the season, 7-2, as they were unable to battle back against the Eagles (9-2, 4-2 WIAC).

The women started the day off with doubles play in which BU fell behind 2-1. No. 1 doubles team Maggie Riermann and Mattie Kidder dropped a heartbreaker 7-9 but Jill Weinzetell and Meghan Schuler were able to pick up an 8-4 win in their match. Weinzetell kept her momentum going into singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 4 match. Mattie Kidder had a chance to bring BU back but fell just short in a three-set loss in the No. 2 singles match.

"Disappointing day, it felt like we had a chance to win," Head coach Drew Fernelius said. "Hopefully we will rebound with the double header next week."

The Royals have doubles duty next weekend with a Friday evening matchup with St. Cloud State University and a 1 p.m. faceoff with Concordia College on Sunday. Both contests will be at White Bear Lake Lifetime Fitness.
