Doubles Sweep Carries Royals to Win in Conference Opener

WINONA, Minn.—Bethel University's women's tennis team continued their strong start to the season with a 6-3 win over Saint Mary's University. The Royals (3-0, 1-0 MIAC) swept the doubles matches to help get the win over the Cardinals (2-4, 0-2 MIAC).

No. 1 doubles team Maggie Riermann and Mattie Kidder rolled to an 8-2 win to start the day off for the Royals. The No. 2 (Mackenzie Novak and Jill Weinzetell) and 3 (Mattie Lubben and Sami Hindt) doubles duos each got 8-4 wins in their respective matches. Mattie Kidder finished her day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles and Mackenzie Novak sealed the team triumph for the Royals with her straight set win in the No. 3 singles match.

"We struggled a little bit in singles play today, but the doubles play carried us through," said head coach Drew Fernelius. "Hopefully we gained some experience this week, we've got a pretty young team."

The team continues conference play Friday, February 16, when they travel to Owatonna to play St. Olaf College at 6:30 p.m.
