MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team held a 2-1 lead late into the third period over the No. 8 ranked University of St. Thomas but the Tommies scored on a power play with just 1:20 remaining in regulation and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
After being shutout on Friday night the Royals struck first quickly, just 4:26 into the game when
Wendy Roberts scored off assists from
Sarah Moy and
Erika Geary.
Michelle Klimstra made 18 saves in the first period to keep the Tommies scoreless as UST held a 18-4 advantage on shots in the first period but the score still read 1-0 in favor of the Royals. The second period was much more evenly played in terms of shots and possession as both teams got off seven shots but it was the Tommies who had the lone score of the period at 14:44. The game remained tied at 1-1 until
Briita Nelson gave Bethel the lead at 14:06 into the third period off an assist from
Abby Felton. UST was able to tie things up on a power play, just their fourth score in 57 chances on the power play for the season, with just 1:20 remaining in the third period. Bethel held a 9-8 advantage on shots in the third but was unable to get the game winner in the final 1:20 or the extra five minutes of overtime, settling for the 2-2 tie.
The Royals record now stands at 6-9-2 overall and 2-6-2 in the MIAC while UST goes to 10-3-4 and 6-1-3. The Tommies sit in second place in the MIAC standings but will not be participating in this years MIAC Playoffs. Bethel is currently in eighth place but just three points out of sixth place which would put the Royals back in the MIAC playoffs for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
