Five Royals Honored with MIAC Men's Tennis Awards

MIAC RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Bethel University's men's tennis team has had an unforgettable 2017 season thus far and Wednesday the conference office recognized the Royals with three All-Conference awards in singles play and four in doubles play, while also acknowledging Matt Schull as the team's representative on the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Kolin Kiekhoefer earned the most points of anyone across the conference, as he finished his senior season with a 19-1 record at No. 2 singles. Kiekhoefer, who's only loss this year was against Gustavus, is currently riding a 16-match win streak.  The Woodbury, Minn., native was also honored to the MIAC All-Conference doubles team, as he and his partner Noah Ridgway have gone 14-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play at No. 2 doubles.

Hunter Fernelius was also selected to the MIAC All-Conference list in both singles and doubles play. Heading into today's MIAC semifinal at Gustavus, Fernlius is 19-2 overall and 7-2 against MIAC opponents at No. 3 singles. He's currently riding a 14-match win streak.

Fernelius and his doubles partner Matt Schull were voted to the MIAC All-Conference doubles team after finishing the regular season 13-3 overall and 7-2 against conference foes at No. 1 doubles. Together they've won 11 straight with two wins over Saint John's and head-to-head wins over UW-La Crosse, St. Thomas, Saint Mary's, and Hamline. Schull, who earned his fourth straight MIAC All-Conference doubles award, was also honored to represent Bethel on the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Also earning All-Conference singles accolades was junior Jakob Bartels. Bartels finished the regular season 12-8, but managed to go 5-4 at No. 4 singles. He completed the regular season 8-2 in his last 10 matches played.
