COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The Bethel men prevailed in a nail-bitter against the Johnnies of Saint John's University by a score of 7-2. With a series of matches that had potential to go either way, the Royals got on the board first by winning two of the three doubles matches. From there they continued to roll, winning five of the six singles matches.
No. 2 doubles pair of
Kolin Kiekhoefer and
Noah Ridgway cruised to a quick 8-0 win, while the other doubles win came in a much different fashion. No. 1 doubles proved to be incredibly tight as
Matt Schull and
Hunter Fernelius prevailed 9-8 (9-7).
Jakob Bartels and
Henry Morris came up just short at No. 3 doubles, losing a heartbreaker by a final score of 8-9 (5-7).
From there, No. 6 singles player
Henry Morris got the Royals back on track winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. With that win, the Royals continued to have the upper hand as they won all but one singles match. Key wins came at No. 5 singles, as
Noah Ridgway won 7-6, 7-5.
Jakob Bartels sealed the deal for the Royals winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
"Today was a really good win for the boys," Coach Fernelius said. "It sets us up for a big match against Macalester, where I know our boys will be ready."
The Royals next match will be Thursday, April 13 when Macalester College visits. The match will be held at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
