Bethel Baseball Wins 11th Straight with Sweep at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Bethel University's baseball team remembered to pack the broomstick for the second consecutive MIAC doubleheader, as BU defeated Concordia College twice in Moorhead Wednesday afternoon. The No. 25-ranked Royals (19-3, 4-0 MIAC) won their 11th straight with 12-1 and 11-6 victories over the Cobbers (10-10, 1-3 MIAC).

Bethel wasted no time, as they jumped ahead of the Cobbers 6-0 in the first 3.5 innings of play. Jake Schubert brought home the first run of the day with an RBI single in the top of the second and later scored when Bryce Marquardt blasted an RBI triple to right-center. Marquardt drove in another run in the fourth with a single to left, which was followed by Esteban Velasco's two-RBI double to left and Bret Neuville's RBI single to center.

Concordia got one back in the bottom of the fourth before the Royals put up five more in the top of the fifth to cement a victory in Wednesday's opener. Esteban Velasco hit a bases-loaded single to left that scored Jake Schubert and Sam Horner, which was followed by a Concordia error during Bret Neuville's at-bat and a double from Austin Ledin that scored Velasco and Neuville. BU added an exclamation point in the top of the seventh when Mitch Butvillas hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Marquardt from third.

Michael Willman started game one for the Royals and gave up one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out two during 3.1 innings pitched. Grant Martinson came on in relief and got out of a bases-loaded with one out jam in the fourth and finished the rest of the game to earn his second win of the season. Martinson allowed three hits and zero walks, while striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.

The second tilt started very similar to the first, as BU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2.5 innings of play. Then after Concordia got one run back in the bottom of the third, Bethel added five more in the top of the fifth.

Bret Neuville put the Royals on the board with an RBI sac-fly in the top of the first. BU added four more in the second when Joey Fredrickson hit an RBI single, which was followed by a two-RBI double by Jake Schubert and an RBI sac-fly from Bryce Marquardt. Head's up base running then allowed Michael Wesner to score a run in the third.

Bethel's five-run fifth started with three straight singles from Bret Neuville, Lars Anderson, and Michael Wesner. With one run already scored, Sam Horner blasted a two-RBI triple, which was followed by a RBI single from Jake Schubert and a RBI double from Esteban Velasco.

Noah Luedtke was asked to start game two and surrendered just two runs on eight hits and zero walks over 4.1 innings pitched. Houston Droel then came on for 1.2 innings before Michael Bohlke threw 2.0 frames and Jake Marsh one.

Bryce Marquardt finished the day 6-for-9 at the plate with four runs and three RBI over the two games played. Esteban Velasco went 4-for-9 with two runs and five RBI, while Jake Schubert went 3-for-7 with one walk, three runs, and four RBI. Other strong performers were Bret Neuville, who went 3-for-8 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI, and Brandon Meyer, who finished 3-for-5 with one run.

Bethel's road stretch continues Saturday afternoon when BU travels to Northfield to take on St. Olaf in a MIAC matinee. The twin bill between the Royals and Oles is schedule to begin at 1 p.m.
