St. Thomas Spoils Senior Day with Sweep over Royals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The Bethel University softball team celebrated senior day Saturday afternoon, but the (RV) University of St. Thomas played spoiler by sweeping BU by equal scores of 3-0, 3-0. The Royals (11-22, 7-14 MIAC) had several opportunities to get on the board, but the Tommies (33-7, 18-4 MIAC) got timely pitching and kept Bethel scoreless in all 14 frames.

UST got one run in the second, third, and sixth inning of game one, which secured the three-run triumph. Wendy Roberts finished the game 1-for-1 with two walks, but Alexa Hanowski and Hannah Hensley were the only two other players to record a hit in Saturday's opener.

Anna Nichols surrendered two earned runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out two in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Tommies then jumped ahead of the Royals with a two-out two-run home run in the third inning of game two and held on to win 3-0 thanks to an insurance run in the seventh. Bethel actually out-hit St. Thomas until the final frame, but couldn't plate a runner despite having multiple opportunities.

Jana Roste finished game two 2-for-3, while Mariah Uphoff, Wendy Roberts, Anna Nichols, and Alexa Hanwoski each recorded a hit.

Hannah Schmidt gave up three earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while also striking one in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Royals are planning to close out their season Sunday in Winona, when they travel to Saint Mary's to finish off their suspended game against the Cardinals that was started on April 5.
