ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Bethel University and the College of Saint Benedict matched up for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex for Cancer Awareness Day. Fans could donate to Hope Lodge for cancer awareness during the games and after every Royals' hit or strike out, fans would get a t-shirt. The teams split the doubleheader with the Royals winning the first game 10-5 and the Blazers winning the second game in six innings 10-1.
Game Two
Anna Nichols found herself in trouble to start the game in the top of the first with the bases loaded and nobody out. But induced a 1-2-3 double play and then a grounder to third base to get out of the inning with no runs.
The Royals then scored in the bottom of the second inning when
Mariah Uphoff had an RBI single that scored
Maddie Fauth. Bethel led 1-0 going into the bottom of the third when they put a crooked number seven on the board, which was highlighted by a
Mariah Uphoff bases clearing triple. Uphoff finished Monday's opener 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The Blazers answered in the fifth with three runs, but
Wendy Roberts had a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth to make the score 10-3. CSB responded with a two-run rally in the top of the seventh, but fell short losing the first game 10-5.
Anna Nichols picked up the win allowing five runs, but only four of them earned. The win improves her record 6-9. Alex Smith suffered the loss and gave up 10 hits and 8 runs in her three innings pitched.
Game Two
Game two started similar to game one, only this time the Blazers were able to capitalize on the rally they made and scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The inning was highlighted by a pair of doubles from Emilie Antony and Claire Boatman. The Royals responded in the bottom of the first scoring on a double play ball by
Anna Nichols.
Kiela DeVlaeminck pitched a gem in game two for the Blazers. She allowed the lone run on seven hits and struck out three in six innings.
Hannah Schmidt struggled for the Royals, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in six innings pitched.
Bethel improves to 5-6 in MIAC play, while the Blazers are now 12-2 against league foes. The Royals will play St. Scholastica tomorrow on the road and will come home on Wednesday to play St. Olaf on Wednesday. First pitch against the Oles is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
