MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team found themselves on the wrong end of an offensive explosion, one night after putting up five goals in a 5-2 win, the Royals were down 5-1 after the first period in an eventual 7-3 loss at Concordia College. The loss ends a disappointing season for the Royals, the defending MIAC champions, as their six year streak of making the MIAC playoffs and two year streak of making the MIAC championship game come to an end.
The Cobbers and Royals traded goals within the first five minutes of the game before Concordia went off, scoring four more times in the first period alone.
Briita Nelson scored the Royals lone goal. Bethel was able to slow the Cobbers down in the second period as Concordia did not score and the Royals scored once on a power play goal by
Sarah Moy. Bethel scored the first goal of the third period to draw within 5-3 as Nelson scored again, just 38 seconds into the third period. Concordia quickly snuffed the Royals rally out however with a score just 42 seconds later and added another score later in the third period for the 7-3 final.
The loss leaves the Royals with a 8-13-4 overall record and 5-9-4 in the MIAC, tied for seventh place. Concordia will head into the MIAC playoffs as the third seed with a overall record of 14-8-3 and 11-5-2 in the MIAC. Three seniors played their final game for the Royals in
Hannah Williams,
Karly Vohden and
Lauren Kolak while fellow senior
Megan O'Brian was unable to play due to injury.
