ST. PETER, Minn.— The Bethel University men's tennis team played a pair of matches Saturday, starting the morning off by losing 9-0 to nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus but rebounding in the second match of the day, defeating Morningside College of Iowa 7-2.
Gustavus came out hot, sweeping all three doubles matches. No. 2 doubles pair of
Kolin Kiekhoefer and
Noah Ridgway lost in a close match by a score of 4-8. While the Royals came up empty handed in singles, both No. 3 and No. 4 singles proved to be encouraging matches. No. 3 singles player
Hunter Fernelius played the best match of his career, winning the first set 6-0, before losing in a third set tiebreaker to the #21 player in the country. No. 4 singles player
Jakob Bartels also gave a great effort in a marathon match but also lost in a third set tiebreaker 14-16.
The Royals bounced back against Morningside by sweeping all three doubles matches. Their success continued in singles where No. 1 player
Matt Schull defeated his opponent 7-6(0) and then 6-3. Other notable matches on the day came at No. 5 singles where
Henry Morris won in a third set tiebreaker 10-6.
Peter Lindberg loss a close match at No. 6 singles by a score of 11-13 in a third set tiebreaker.
The Royals look to keep their momentum rolling next Saturday against the regionally ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 6 p.m in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
