ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Bethel University men's hockey team took on No. 15 ranked Saint John's University in a rare Tuesday night affair and fell by a 4-2 score at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Royals scored first and last but four goals in between for SJU was too much for Bethel.
After a scoreless first period in which Bethel goaltender
Joe Sheppard made 13 saves,
Jackson Purvis started off the second period with a goal just 1:07 in.
Peter Barral and
Michael Piehler assisted on Purvis' goal. The Johnnies were able to tie the game just over two minutes later and then took the lead late in the period with 28 seconds remaining. SJU tacked on two more goals within the first 10 minutes of the third period before Bethel scored again at 11:10 in the third.
Dallas Marvin scored 13 seconds into a Bethel power play, their only conversion in eight power play opportunities, with assists to
Kade Brannon and
Oliver Trachsel. Bethel was able to get two more power play opportunities in the remaining minutes, firing off five shots, but were just unable to score again.
The loss was the second to the undefeated Johnnies this year after a 5-1 loss in the season opener at the MIAC Hockey Showcase with Tuesday's game being an official MIAC conference game. Bethel now sits at 0-1 in the MIAC and 0-5 on the year. Of the Royals first five games three have come against teams ranked in the Top 15 by either D3Hockey.com or USCHO.com. The schedule doesn't lighten up as the Royals will face off with No. 4 (USCHO) / No. 10 (D3Hockey) Augsburg College this Friday and Saturday. Friday's contest will be the first home game for the Royals at Bethel University Arena.
