Cobbers and Royals Split Series After Concordia's 2-1 Saturday Win


MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Bethel University men's hockey team was hungry for a MIAC series sweep Saturday but were just unable to get the goal they needed late in the game as Concordia pulled out a 2-1 victory. The Royals and Cobbers entered the third period deadlocked at 1-1 and the Royals fired off a team high 10 shots on goal in the final frame but were unable to score while the Cobbers scored at 8:25 in the period to take the lead. The Cobbers were whistled for a five minute major penalty at 12:47 in the thid and another penalty at 15:42 giving Bethel five minutes of power play opportunity and two minutes of 5-on-3 but the Cobbers were able to survive the Royals onslaught and hold on for the victory.

The first two goals of the game came within 49 seconds of each other later in the second period. The Cobbers scored first before Bethel responded with a Peter Barral score off assists by Jackson Purvis and Johan Kling. Joe Sheppard made a dozen or more saves in each period for a total of 40 in the game for Bethel. 

The Royals will take a break from MIAC play as the travel out to Wisconsin over Thanksgiving weekend. Friday night the Royals will faceoff with Concordia University (Wis.) at 7 p.m. in Mequon, Wisconsin and will then take on Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on Saturday at Noon.
