Bethel Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at 2017 MIAC Championships

RESULTS

JORDAN, Minn. — Bethel University's men's golf team finished in fifth place with a total score of 911 at the three-day, 54-hole MIAC Championships. The Royals, who carded a team score of 300 on Saturday and 314 on Sunday, exploded for a 297 on the final day of play Monday at the par-72, 6,961-yard Ridges at Sand Creek.
 
Jon Espe shot the team's best 18-hole score of the weekend as the sophomore finished with a two-under-par round of 70 on Monday. Espe put together a stretch of four straight birdies, which helped him finish the tournament with a three-day score of 223 ( 7). Espe, who manufactured 33 pars and eight birdies throughout the championship, finished in a three-way tie for eighth as a result, which allowed him to earn MIAC All-Conference honors for the first time in his career.
 
Behind Espe was Noah Bragg, who finished his tremendous fall season with a three-day total of 228. Bragg, who was averaging 73.3 strokes per round heading into the tournament, composed a 75 Saturday, 77 Sunday, and 76 Monday. The 2016 All-MIAC honoree mustered 34 pars and five birdies, which put him in a tie for 16th (out of 49 golfers).
 
Sam Jenson completed the conference meet with an overall score of 232. The junior, who was penciled in as the team's fifth starter, carded a 74 on Saturday, an 80 on Sunday, and a 78 on Monday for a tie for 23rd. Jenson tallied 28 pars and seven birdies for the tournament.
 
Right behind Jenson was newcomer Noah Frobom, who carded a 234 over the course of three days. The freshman from Chaska, Minn., settled down nicely after an 83 on opening day. Frobom, who finished with 21 pars and a team-high nine birdies, dropped five strokes on Sunday for a 78 and five more on Monday for a 73.
 
Rounding out Bethel's Top 5 scores from the weekend was Dallas Marvin. Marvin posted a 77 Saturday, followed by an 80 Sunday, and a 78 Monday for a three-day score of 235. Marvin's eagle at the par-5, 518-yard seventh on Monday was the only eagle of the weekend by any competitor.
