Box Score 2 ST. PAUL—Bethel University's baseball team split Tuesday's road doubleheader at Macalester College. The Royals (17-15, 7-7 MIAC) fell in game one 3-11, but rebounded in game two and went on to defeat the Scots (15-14, 5-11) 7-5. BU's 7-7 record in league-play has the Royals in a tie for fifth with Concordia—a team they split with earlier in the season—and two games out of playoff contention with six games remaining in the year.
Bethel scored three runs in the top of the first in game one, but surrendered seven runs to Macalester in the bottom of the frame. Trailing 3-7 after one inning of play, BU was unable to score in the final six innings.
The Royals once again scored in the first inning of game two and despite the Scots evening the score at 1-1 in the second, Bethel jumped ahead for good with a two-run fifth and a one-run sixth. Macalester narrowed the gap with a two-run seventh, but a three-run ninth secured the win for BU in game two.
Bryce Marquardt,
Bret Neuville, and
Sam Horner all finished the day with four hits at the plate. Horner finished 4-for-8 with one walk, and four runs batted in.
Bret Neuville went 4-for-8 with one walk, three runs, and two RBI.
Bryce Marquardt was 4-for-9 with a pair of one and one stolen base.
Also contributing at the plate was
Jarad Watts, who finished 3-for-6 with two walks and one run, and
Mitch Fredrickson, who hit his first career home run.
Houston Droel gave the Royals a great performance on the hill in game two. The Bloomington, Minnesota, native gave up two earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out six in 7.0 innings pitched.
Carson Selin earned his second save in relief, as he pitched the final two innings of game two.
With their backs against the wall, Bethel hosts its final home doubleheader this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Royals take on the Saint John's Johnnies—a team that swept top-seeded St. Thomas Tuesday—before traveling to face Gustavus and Saint Mary's in their final two road series.
