Bats Power Bethel Past Northwestern in Home Opener

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Bethel University's bats were out early and often in Tuesday afternoon's home opener against the University of Northwestern. The Royals (10-7) put up seven-first inning runs, which led to a 13-1 victory over the Eagles (5-11). BU has now defeated UNW twice this season with a combined margin of 25-2.

Bryce Marquardt led off the first with a single, which was followed by RBI doubles from both Jarad Watts and Bret Neuville. Matt Conrad then hit his first home run of the season to make the score 4-0 after the first four batters. The rally continued when Brandon Meyer singled to right, Sam Horner doubled to left, and Mitch Fredrickson hit a two-RBI single down the line. Esteban Velasco doubled to left, which put runners on second and third, before Marquardt's single scored Bethel's seventh run of the inning.

The Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the second when Sam Horner plated Matt Conrad with a double to right field. Lars Anderson's triple to right field scored Horner and Anderson later scored on an error by the UNW infielder.

Already 10-0 after two innings of play, BU scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lars Anderson started the frame with a single, which was followed by an RBI-double by Mitch Fredrickson and a single by Esteban Velasco. Bryce Marquardt then plated both Fredrickson and Velasco with a single to left center.

Matt Herringshaw picked up his first win on the mound, as the starting right-hander allowed one hit and no runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Herringshaw struck out six and walked none in the victory.

Offensively, BU finished with 21 total hits in 46 at bats. Eight players recorded multiple hits, including Bryce Marquardt, who tallied four hits, one run, and two RBI, and Matt Conrad, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Mitch Fredrickson went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI in his season debut at third base.

The Royals begin MIAC play Saturday afternoon, when they play host to Augsburg College at Hargis Park. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
