ResultsMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's tennis team began their conference season on Saturday with a 7-2 win over Concordia College at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Royals triumph marks their fourth consecutive victory to start the 2016 season.
"That was a great win for us, we have some tough competition ahead so we need to continue to grind and play our hearts out. If we do that, we'll let the chips fall where they may," said head coach
Drew Fernelius.
Following two highly-contested matches to start the day, the Royals once again swept the doubles portion of play on Saturday. The No. 3 team of
Hunter Fernelius and
Kolin Kiekhoefer captured the first point of the day with an 8-3 win while the No. 1 and No. 2 teams battled their way to 8-4 and 8-5 victories respectively.
"It certainly makes life easier when you're able to get a good start in the doubles and take that 3-0 lead into singles," said Fernelius.
Junior
Matt Schull kept the momentum going for the Royals in the No. 1 singles match, winning in a third-set tiebreaker. Schull defeated Isaac Toivonen, a regionally ranked player who had beaten Schull just a season ago. The remaining Royals followed with three more victories in the singles, highlighted by freshman
Henry Morris who rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win in his first appearance of the season.
The Royals, now 4-0 on the season, will seek to extend their winning streak next weekend as they will travel back to the Baseline Tennis Center to face Central College and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
