BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team put on an all-around show for the packed house at Bethel University Arena for the final home game of the 2015-16 season as the Royals took down Gustavus by a 3-0 score. Senior goaltender
Matt Rowe had perhaps his finest performance in net for the Royals, earning his second career shutout and even recorded an assist to go along with his 26 saves. Three different Royals scored Bethel's goals, one in each period.
Bethel wasted little time jumping out to an early lead to set the tone for the night. Mike Bond sent a shot on net and the loose puck was knocked in by
Justin Bonanno just 1:56 into the game. The next Royals score was at 17:37 in the second period and was a thing of beauty. Rowe sent the puck to
Eric Szafranski who fired a perfect saucer pass right through the Gustavus defense and found
Dylan Webster at the blue line. Webster was then able to make a great move to beat the Gustie goaltender and finish the breakaway, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The final Bethel score came at 6:50 in the third period when
Peter Barral and
JT Walters hooked up to finish a two-on-one. Bethel was then able to kill off a pair of Gustavus power plays and defended over four minutes of the Gusties using an extra skater with an empty net to preserve the shutout. In all, Bethel killed off all four Gustavus power plays while the Royals were just 0-for-1.
The win improves the Royals to 3-18-2 and 2-12 in the MIAC. Gustavus falls to 6-13-4 and 5-7-2. The Royals will travel next weekend up to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for the final series of the 2015-16 season.
