ST. JOSEPH, Minn.—Bethel University's women's basketball team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon when defeating the College of Saint Benedict on the road by a final score of 55-50. The Royals (11-8, 7-5 MIAC), who overcame a six-point deficit midway through the third quarter, ended the Blazers (13-6, 8-4 MIAC) four-game winning streak with the come-from-behind victory.
Â
BU trailed 31-37 with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter, but manufactured a 12-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 43-41 lead with 7:53 left in the game. CSB regained a three-point advantage with 5:57 on the clock, but Bethel's 10-2 run in the final 3:42 proved to be the difference in Saturday's MIAC triumph.
Â
The Royals dominated in several phases of the game, including points off of turnovers (21-13), bench points (30-18), and points in the paint (12-2). Bethel completed the contest shooting 35.3 percent from the floor and 30.8 percent from downtown, but just 57.7 percent from the free throw line. Ironically, CSB's numbers were eerily similar, as the Blazers shot 35.4 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from downtown, and 51.9 percent from the charity stripe.
Â
Molly O'Toole came off the bench for the Royals and scored a game-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. O'Toole, who made a clutch go-ahead 3-pointer late in the game, also posted four rebounds in 25 minutes of play.
Â
Kalli Zimmermann also scored in double figures, as she finished the competition with 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
Angie Kirchoff was another stud off the Bethel bench, as she recorded eight points and four boards in 18 minutes.
Â
BU continues its road stretch on Wednesday night, when they travel to Northfield to take on St. Olaf College. The Oles are one spot back of Bethel in the playoff standings, so the midweek MIAC matchup is sure to be full of intensity. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
