Royals Suffer Setback versus St. Thomas in MIAC Playoffs

MINNETONKA, Minn.—Bethel University's baseball team entered the 2015 MIAC Baseball Playoffs with a lot of momentum and despite owning a 1-0 lead after five innings played, the Royals were unable to fight off the underdog Tommies in the opening round of the postseason tournament.

St. Thomas used a seven-run seventh to topple BU and advance to the winner's game tomorrow, while Bethel falls to the loser's game at 11 a.m. Given the fact that it's a double-elimination tournament, the Royals have the opportunity to get back to the championship game, but will need two wins tomorrow and two wins Sunday in order to become conference tournament champions.

Designated hitter Lars Anderson had two of Bethel's three hits throughout the day, as the sophomore blasted a solo home run in the second inning and posted a single in the seventh. Matt Conrad finished 0-for-2 with two walks, while Jarad Watts went 1-for-4.

Joe Zorn, who was 6-1 coming into the weekend, was charged with his second loss of the season after surrendering five earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 6.2 innings pitched. Zorn struck out seven in the loss.

St. Thomas starter Eric Veglahn improved to 7-1 with an eight-inning effort, where he allowed two hits and three walks with four strikeouts. UST shortstop Brady Johnson went 4-for-5 with two runs and three runs batted in.
