ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- On a picture perfect Tuesday afternoon, the Bethel University Royals used a pair of fence clearing bombs and solid pitching to defeat the University of Northwestern Eagles. The Royals defended their home field Hargis Park successfully, as Sean Glenn started on the mound for Bethel. Glenn went five innings allowing two hits and striking out three, without allowing a run or a walk. Carson Selin, Noah Callister and Kelvin Minning also saw action for the Royals and aided in the shutout.
The Royal's bats also heated up on this 72-degree day, as they compiled five runs on ten hits. The scoring started early for the Royals, as Bryce Marquardt doubled to left center in the second inning, scoring two runs. Marquardt finished the day with two hits on three plate appearances. The third inning saw Mike Schultz, who went two for three on the day, blast a two-run shot to left field. Schultz however, was not done, as he launched a homer down the left field line in the fifth. The solo shot gave the Royals a 5-0 advantage, a score that would hold for the rest of the contest.
The win boosts the Royals' record to 19-4 on the year, with a MIAC doubleheader coming up at Hargis Park on Wednesday, April 15th against Concordia College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Bethel enters an important stretch in their conference schedule, as they have twin bills against Concordia, Gustavus, and St. Thomas in the next week. The Royals look to cement their position atop the conference standings. St. Thomas also holds a 7-1 conference record, the same mark as Bethel which will provide a dramatic backdrop as the two teams battle for first place on April 21st.
