MIAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-WeekThe Bethel baseball team remained tied atop the MIAC standings thanks to a 4-0 performance last week, with senior pitcher
Joe Zorn (Stillwater, Minn.) turning in two big, but different, contributions. Zorn was 1-0 with a save and a 0.75 ERA in two appearances last week, allowing just one run on eight hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Zorn Monday with the MIAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week award.
Zorn's first appearance of the week was out of the bullpen, as he earned a three-inning save in a 7-5 win against Saint John's with one run allowed on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. He was even better in his lone start of the week, as Zorn threw a complete-game, nine-inning shutout in Saturday's 3-0 win over Carleton. Zorn scattered five hits, didn't walk a batter and racked up seven strikeouts in the brilliant performance. This season, Zorn is 4-0 with two saves and a 1.24 ERA in eight appearances. He leads the MIAC in complete games (four), shutouts (one), ranks third in ERA and wins, fourth in strikeouts (38) and fifth in saves, and he has a 19-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Thanks to the sweeps of Saint John's and Carleton, Bethel improved to 18-4 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC, and the Royals remain tied atop the conference standings with defending champion St. Thomas. Bethel will try to extend its five-game winning streak when it hosts Concordia Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. MIAC doubleheader. The Royals also head to Gustavus Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference twin bill.
