LAKEVILLE, Minn. - After a 9-0 loss Friday night to an outstanding team from Carleton College the Bethel University mens tennis team rebounded on Saturday with a solid 8-1 win over Wartburg College.
"I felt like our guys really battled hard Friday night, but in the end Carleton was just too tough," said Bethel head coach
Drew Fernelius. "Getting swept in doubles is really a back breaker, but the guys rebounded and fought hard in singles. We competed well and had close matches right down the line, especially winning the first set at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, but just couldn't pull out a victory."
Saturday afternoon against Wartburg, who finished second in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) a year ago, Bethel turned the tables winning all 3 doubles matches to set things up for an easy win.
"We were able to get eight guys in the match this afternoon and showed great determination to get back in the win column," coach Fernelius said. "
Matt Schull and
Blake Watts were especially impressive with 6-0, 6-0 wins to clinch the victory after the doubles sweep.
Kolin Kiekhoefer,
Jakob Bartels and
Kent Schaller followed with impressive straight set wins."
Luke Palmquist was the lone Royal to fall, losing the first set and the match at No. 3 singles.
The loss to Carleton dropped Bethel to 2-3 in MIAC play while the win over Wartburg improved the overall record to 4-4. Bethel will now turn their attention to their spring break trip to Orlando, Florida where they will play seven matches in five days beginning on Sunday.
