Spring Break Blog: Day 5

Men's Tennis

The Bethel Univeristy baseball team dropped their first game of the week and snapped a seven-game win streak when falling to Johns Hopkins Wednesday afternoon in a nine-inning contest 5-1. The Royals, who outhit the Blue Jays 9-8, stranded 10 baserunners throughout the game and had two costly errors that let in three unearned runs. Bryce Marquardt finished the nonconference affair 3-of-5 with a double, while Matt Conrad was 2-of-4 with BU's only RBI of the day. In his first collegiate start Noah Callister allowed five hits, one walk, and one earned run in 5.0 innings pitched. With the loss Bethel falls to 7-2 on the season with another nine-inning game against Lasell College on the horizon tomorrow at noon. 

Men's Golf

The Bethel University men's golf team played at Walkabout Golf and Country Club in Mims, Florida. The Royals practice round was another opportunity to prepare for this weekend's match against Florida Tech.

Women's Golf

The Bethel University women's golf team continued to work on their game by playing Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, California. The Royals completed the Cal Lutheran Invitational yesterday, but utilized the day's round to sharpen their skills for the remaining spring season.

Softball

The Bethel University softball team continued the trend of splitting with their opponents, as the Royals fell to Concordia University-Wisconsin in Wednesday's opener before defeating Western Connecticut State in six innings. BU overcame a 5-1 deficit against the Falcons in the first game, using a four-run fifth to charge ahead 6-5. CUW then tied it up in the sixth, but Bethel was able to manufacture the go-ahead run in the seventh. For the third time this week, though, the Royals' opponent was able to string together a two-out rally in the last half-inning that downed BU in the end 7-8. Bethel continued to showcase great perseverance, however, as the Royals bounced back yet again in game two with a 9-0 rout over WCS in six innings. Caroline Kivisto's home run in the sixth witha runner on ended teh game and teh day with a win for BU. Kelsey Anderson pitched her second consecutive complete-game shutout. 

Men's Tennis

The Bethel University men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to Colorado College Wednesday morning, as the Royals fell to the Tigers 5-4 despite going 2-1 in doubles play and winning the first set in four of the six singles matches. Matt Schull finished his day 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles and Jakob Bartels also went unbeaten with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, but the Royals fell at No. 2, 3, and 6 singles with all going to a third-set super tiebreaker.

Women's Tennis

The Bethel University women's tennis team dropped their first match of the spring break trip Wednesday morning, as the Tigers from Colorado College outlasted the Royals 6-3. BU began the day 2-4 in singles play, but won just one more point at No. 3 doubles. Bethel lost at both No. 1 and 2 singles by a final tally of 4-6, 5-7, which proved to be the difference maker down the stretch. Mattie Kidder and Larissa Voss each won their matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, while Kourtney Jakubic and Anna Browning won at No. 3 doubles.

Track and Field

The Bethel University track and field teams were fortunate to be able to train at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. The Royals participate in the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational this Saturday in San Diego.
